Future-proof travels to New York

Our first exhibit since establishing Story Lab

Future-proof was the first exhibit we designed after setting up Story Lab in Hong Kong in 2022. It has been a thrilling way to begin, and the response has been positive and encouraging.

Four features, one tower

The concept started with the building itself. Rather than telling the whole story of The Henderson, we picked four of its most distinctive features and let each one stand for a way of thinking about the future:

  • Science: the sustainable approach

  • Design: human-centric design

  • Art: aesthetics and function, from the organic form to the hydroponic “oasis in the air”

  • Technology: advancing the industry, with weather-resilient construction, smart building technology and three patented systems

We reinterpret the tower, drawn apart into these four domains, each shown as a glowing sphere. On the exhibition floor, the spheres become four cylinders: Innovation, Aesthetics, Technology, and Creativity. Visitors walk around them and see this tower as an act of imagination as well as engineering. The thinking behind it is the exhibit’s big idea: those who have a “why” to build can solve almost any “how”, as aspired by the project team at Henderson Land.

On the road

Future-proof was part of “M3: Beyond Territories”, and it has already travelled to Hangzhou and Beijing before reaching New York in October 2022. Quarantine rules meant our team could only attend the New York event, so we saw one stop in person and followed the others from afar. That makes the response from visitors in each city mean even more to us.

Next: Hong Kong

The Hong Kong showing at Asia Society Hong Kong Center is the one we have been looking forward to most. It is the audience we most want to talk with, about how we can promote architecture in Hong Kong and make it part of everyday conversation.

“The innovative displays in the three core zones ("Made", "Make", and "Making") of the exhibition fully epitomises the timelessness and timeliness of the architectural achievements of Hong Kong in the past quarter-century.”

—Candy Nip, Press Release, Oct 2022

“The most eye-catching installation.”

—John Hill, World-Architects, Oct 2022

“Some of the exhibition highlights include Future-proof, presented by Henderson Land Group and designed by Story Lab Ltd., which features projects from one of Hong Kong’s major developers demonstrating the need to push for innovation to promote a sustainable future for Hong Kong.”

— Blue Medium, Nov 2022
